Lead Behavior Interventionist

General Responsibilities:

 The position requires using therapeutic communication, experiential learning, and strength-based strategies to provide opportunities for youth to make positive choices, gain self-confidence, advance their academic skills, and learn skills critical to their lifelong development.  A strong sense of professionalism is required.  The person shall present themselves as a strong role model for children and adolescents and demonstrate management and supervision of students in accordance with program policies, philosophies, and mission. Must maintain confidentiality and privacy of those seeking services, with peers, on and off site, and in all forms of communication.  

The Lead Behavior Interventionist works in concert with the Behavioral Specialist, Clinical Case Manager, Special Ed Case Manager and Teachers to provide supports training and supervision to behavioral staff and oversees implementation of individual student and the school behavioral and treatment plans.   

Essential Duties:

Administrative: 

  • Provide oversight of behavior interventions and supports all staff in facilitating and adjusting plans.   
  • Ensures appropriate procedures are utilized and that communication, paperwork, and debriefs occur.  Provides training, support, and supervision to Behavior Interventionist. 
  • Defuse difficult situations and provide breaks, support, and crisis interventions. 
  • Model and implement best practices for therapeutic interventions. 
  • Provide ongoing support and supervision to assigned Behavioral Interventionists.  
  • Facilitate training for behavioral interventionists and other staff as requested.  
  • May participate in hiring, supervising and evaluation of behavior interventionists. 
  • Complete all related program specific, agency related and regulatory paperwork in an accurate and timely manner.  
  • Follow all agency and school specific policies and procedures, including the school dress code. Ensure appropriate dress for the activities and/or meetings planned.  Maintain flexibility and the ability to work in a dynamic team, yet ready to work independently

Academic, Therapeutic, and Behavior Services: 

  • Foster a positive approach to problem solving and maintain a positive environment. 
  • Model and utilize best practices in education and special education when working one-on-one or in small groups.  
  • Develop and maintain trauma informed best practices: connection, building relationships, naming emotions, co-regulation, empathy, acceptance, congruence, presence, and attunement. Maintain awareness of own affect, posture, body language, and complexity and tone of language.  Staff should be comfortable asking for a break and peers comfortable subbing staff out and letting staff know they can step in and give a break.  
  • Participate in on going evaluations and reviews of Individual Plan of Care (IPC), Individual Education Plan, and Positive Behavior Support Plans (CLEAR – Challenge, Logic, Emotions, Actions and Results) and support student in understanding of these plans and supports. 
  • Become familiar with students’ academic abilities and disabilities, treatment needs, and behavior plans in accordance with their Individual Education and Treatment Plan. 
  • Track and report student progress and staff interventions toward treatment goals using daily data sheets, daily CERT (Concurrent Education Rehabilitation and Treatment notes, daily communication with peers and leaders, SIR’s (Serious Incident Reports), and in team and treatment meetings. 
  • Always strive to foster a positive approach to problem solving and maintain a positive environment.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in human services or related field. Two years of human service delivery with children and families is preferred. 
  • Prior experience in a therapeutic day treatment/group milieu treatment program.  
  • Superior interpersonal skills and the ability to function in a team required.  
  • Valid driver’s license, excellent driving record, and access to a safe, reliable, insured vehicle.  
  • At least one year proven, consistent experience as a Behavior Interventionist or similar role.   
  • Ability to complete and maintain certifications including Handle with Care Part 1, Part 2, and medication protocols, First Aid & CPR certification, and Handle with Care Trainer

Work/Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to engage youth in physical activities such hiking, outdoor sports, etc.  
  • Must have the physical ability to contain children in crisis; this may include authorized methods in physical restraint if necessary and/or running to catch a child.  
  • Ability to lift items up to 50 lbs.
